SQL Server Disaster Recovery

Disaster recovery is the plan for the day the server, the site or the storage is gone. A second replica in the same rack is high availability. It is not a disaster recovery plan.

Two numbers, then a test

The business has to say how much data it can lose and how long it can wait to be back. Those two numbers decide log backups, a replica in another site, or a restore from copies kept off the server. A plan that has never been run is a document, not a recovery.

HA and DR designs are both on high availability and disaster recovery. The backup chain itself is on backup and recovery.

A usable plan names

  • How much data loss is acceptable
  • How long recovery may take
  • Where the copy lives if this site is lost
  • Who declares the disaster and who runs the restore
  • The last date the restore was actually tried

Bring the recovery numbers

If you do not have them yet, we can help the business choose them and then test whether SQL Server can meet them.
